Transformative Action Award showcases Europe’s most inspiring examples of urban sustainable transformation

The application deadline for the 2021 Transformative Action Award recently closed, with this year’s award receiving 27 applications from cities, regions and civil society organisations across Europe.

Applications to this year’s award span 11 countries and cover a wide range of sustainability topics, from water to nature-based solutions, biodiversity, social justice and sustainable mobility.

A number of ICLEI Members are among the entries for this year’s award, including: Agueda, Braga, Cascais (Portugal), Alba Iulia (Romania), Cannes (France), Izmit, Konya (Turkey), and Nijmegen (The Netherlands).

The award, co-organised by ICLEI, the Basque Country, and the City of Aalborg (Denmark), and supported by the European Committee of the Regions (CoR) and the European Investment Bank (EIB), rewards Transformative Actions that use the pathways outlined in the Basque Declaration to bring about the socio-cultural, socio-economic, and technological transformation of societies.

The shortlisted candidates will be revealed in September and the winner will be announced at an award ceremony later this year.
Alongside being recognised as a leader of sustainable urban transformation in Europe, the winner of the 2021 award will receive €10,000 to help initiate further transformative actions in their city or region.
