To tackle global water scarcity and the expensive operation and maintenance cost of wastewater treatment, Viladecans, a municipality which forms part of ICLEI Member Diputació de Barcelona (Spain), is aiming to become a recycled water supplier through the INCOVER project, moving wastewater treatment from being a sanitation technology to a bio-product recovery industry.

The INCOVER project, which recently won the Sludge & Resource Recovery Initiative of the Year award at the UK Water Industry Awards 2018, aims to develop innovative and sustainable technologies for a resource recovery-based treatment of wastewater, using smart operation monitoring and control methods.

The Viladecans plant, the first to be established through the INCOVER project, was presented as a case study at a meeting which took place on 5 June at the Faculty of Science and Technology in Lisbon (Portugal). 

Other case studies presented include: the El Torno WWT plant in Chiclana de la Frontera (Spain) and a treatment plant in Germany.
