ICLEI Europe commends longstanding network leader Ana Oregi

As a network, ICLEI Europe is governed by the ambitious local governments that make up its membership. Cities steer the organisation through the European Regional Executive Committee (REXCom), made up of Mayors and Deputy Mayors of ICLEI Members who are elected to the Committee. REXCom members take on responsibilities like approving new ICLEI Europe initiatives and programmes, and steering its focus year-to-year.

For many years now, ICLEI Europe has been fortunate to have Deputy Mayor Ana Oregi of Vitoria-Gasteiz (Basque Country) as a REXCom member, a voting member of the ICLEI Global Council, and a Special Advisor to the ICLEI Global Executive Committee for the “Urban research on sustainability challenge solutions” portfolio. We are sad to share that at the end of this month, Deputy Mayor Oregi will conclude her role steering ICLEI Europe.

In her position in the REXCom, Deputy Mayor Oregi acted as a spokesperson for the EU Renovation Wave; Culture and Cultural Heritage; and for Sustainable Urban Mobility. The latter builds on her expertise as a member of the CIVITAS Policy Advisory Committee, a group of leading elected officials that advise the CIVITAS Initiative, which is itself one of the flagship programmes helping the European Commission achieve its ambitious mobility and transport goals.

She has been a dedicated member of the ICLEI Europe community, sharing expertise at events like the 9th European Conference on Sustainable Cities and Towns and the Malmö Summit, and in numerous articles and interviews.

In June 2021, Oregi shared her view that: “The voice of the cities and regions needs to be heard on the global arena. ICLEI offers us that strong representation on the European and international stage. Working together, cities and regions are stronger and able to advocate changes all over the world.”
