Local Governments’ mobilization and backing for the development and implementation of a global and comprehensive post-2012 climate change agreement
2007 - 2010
The project "Local Governments’ mobilization and backing for the development and implementation of a global and comprehensive post-2012 climate change agreement” (Europe Aid) is co-funded by he European Commission and the Norwegian government.
This project has seven emerging economy countries as the scope for the action: China, Brazil, India, Indonesia, Mexico, Nigeria and South Africa.
The Regional Offices of ICLEI as well as the UCLG Sections are working to mobilize Local Governments in the target countries at three different levels:
- Firstly, to increase the awareness regarding climate change among Local Governments and to mobilize them towards a common position for a comprehensive post-2012 climate agreement.
- Secondly, and with this aim, Local Governments need to advocate for this position at the national level, in order to achieve a strong mobilization of nations in the recognition of the role of Local Governments in Climate Protection.
- Thirdly, to implement global activities for a global visibility of the role of Local Governments in the fight against Climate Change.
This project is one of the key components of the Local Government Climate Roadmap, which allows this process to include the emerging economies’ perspective, a key point of view in international climate negotiations.
