G20 Transport Task Group casts an eye on the future of mobility

A new report is now out, which explores the future of mobility, with a focus on vehicle emissions reductions.

The report is authored by the G20 Transport Task Group, a group established by the G20 to "identify and exchange best practices among G20 countries on the implementation of cost-effective energy efficiency and emission control measures in the transport sector." The group convened in Tokyo (Japan) in late-2019, and the new report synthesises meeting outputs.

ICLEI Europe attended the meeting as an expert advisor in urban mobility, facilitating discussions and bringing together insights from its portfolio of urban mobility projects such as GreenCharge, Handshake and BuyZet, as well as work in the Big Buyers Initiative.

Knowledge was shared on methods to reduce emissions, spanning from behavioural change and awareness-raising factors, to mobility planning, new engine technologies, standards and to enforcement regimes.

The meeting was led by the US EPA and the European Union's Directorate-General for Climate Action. It brought together an international group of national-level practitioners from the G20 countries, and well as guest nations that are neighbours of the host country, Japan.

The meeting report includes a summary of policy developments in each nation, alongside key national resources.

Reggie Tricker, Sustainable Mobility Officer at ICLEI Europe observed, "Over the course of the three days, meeting participants showed a strong sense of common purpose among policymakers, international experts, and the industry to the scale up the implementation of cost-effective energy efficiency and emission control measures in the transport sector."
