The proposed EU Nature restoration law is a first of its kind legislation, which upon signing would hold create binding targets for the restoration of degraded ecoystems. Environmental degredation is indeed accelerating, at a concerning figure of 81% according to a 2020 EEA report on the status of nature in the EU.
The proposal builds on the current EU nature directives, and is regarded as the European Union's key contribution to ongoing negotiations of the post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework.
Restoring ecosystems and the species they host will help:
- increase biodiversity
- secure ecosystem services
- maintain clean water and air, pollinating crops, and protect us from floods
- limit global warming to 1.5°C
- build up Europe’s resilience in order to prevent natural disasters and mitigate food security risk
