With more and more severe and frequent droughts in Europe, the risks are still underestimated. Wetlands, the natural freshwater reservoirs of Europe, are a robust solution. The EU-funded NBS4Drought project will show the cost-effectiveness of wetland-based nature-based solutions (NBS) for coping with water scarcity. Pilot testing seven wetland sites in five European climate regimes, the project will offer key technical, economic, and social data. Through citizen science, stakeholder engagement, and creative monitoring, NBS4Drought will coproduce resilient water management, aquifer recharge, and drought resilience. The outputs will feed into tools and policy for upscaling effective solutions in Europe, allowing communities to prepare for a water-scarce future.
