Climate-neutral and Smart Cities Mission

2022

In the Climate-Neutral and Smart Cities Mission, 8 German Mission Cities are working as pioneers to identify barriers (especially in terms of policy and finance) to climate neutrality and to constructively engage in dialogue to propose reforms that will ultimately benefit all German cities. As centers of transformation for climate protection with a strong culture of participation, cities play a key role in society. For the German federal government in particular, they act as one of the main implementation partners of the Paris Agreement, the European Green Deal, and the Climate Act.

Climate protection is already understood as a cross-cutting task at the municipal level, and in order to achieve the ambitious goals, much stronger cooperation and governance between the local, state, and federal levels is needed. This is exactly where stronGER cities, in cooperation with partners such as ICLEI Europe, can act quickly, effectively, and with the relevant decision-makers.

stronGER cities, as an established platform of the German Mission Cities seeks to engage with national and regional governments on “multi-level governance” to advance the transition to climate neutrality in cities.
