Local governments are at the forefront of tackling climate change, and artificial intelligence (AI) can be a transformative tool to support their efforts. To empower public officials with the knowledge and skills to use AI effectively and responsibly, ICLEI Europe, together with Google.org and the Centre for Public Impact (CPI), is offering a free, interactive training program tailored for city officials across Europe.
Course Details
The AI Opportunity Fund training, developed by MinnaLearn and the University of Helsinki, is a four-week online course designed to build foundational AI knowledge. The course covers machine learning, neural networks, large language models, and the societal implications of AI, including bias, privacy, and governance. The format combines self-paced learning with live expert-led workshops, totaling 16 hours of instruction. Participants also receive a professional certificate upon completion.
The course is available in multiple languages, ensuring accessibility to city officials across Europe. Throughout the program, participants will gain practical skills to apply AI in their daily work, such as managing data, modelling environmental scenarios, and improving decision-making for climate action.
Importantly, learners will join a growing European network of peers, encouraging continued knowledge exchange and peer learning. To complement the online experience, participants will have the opportunity to connect in person at leading events like the European Urban Resilience Forum (EURESFO) in Rotterdam and the Smart City Expo in Barcelona.
How to Apply
The first cohort launched in April 2025, and additional cohorts will roll out over the next two years. Registration is still open, and we encourage public officials working in European cities to apply.
