ACCESSanitation was implemented by a consortium of six partners led by the ICLEI European Secretariat and including the ICLEI regional offices for Africa, South Asia and Southeast Asia. The project facilitated the south-south exchange of knowledge and experience on sustainable sanitation practices to other local governments in Asia and Sub-Saharan Africa through a range of dissemination channels, workshops and a final conference.
Together with an Advisory Board composed of selected experts from the Sustainable Sanitation Alliance (SuSanA) and in particular from the working group on Sustainable Sanitation in Cities, the consortium supported five cities each in India and the Philippines to develop local action plans, conduct awareness raising campaigns and implement pilot projects for sustainable sanitation.
Other main outputs of the project were:
· Inventories on relevant frameworks, initiatives and opportunities regarding sanitation in India, the Philippines and the SADC region
· A report on lessons learned from earlier major sanitation projects and programmes in Africa
· An electronic training tool on sustainable sanitation
· Guidelines for developing and implementing urban sanitation awareness raising campaigns
· A compilation of 30 case studies on local government led policy and action for sustainable sanitation
