ICLEI Europe has long sought to ensure that ambitious climate action – with the goal of climate neutrality – is equitable and just for all. Yet what this entails in practice is not always self-evident, particularly when applying a justice lens across various topics and policy areas.
In order to cut through the confusion and understand our own role in this shifting landscape ICLEI’s Justice, Equity and Democracy team read, compared, and contrasted some of the key literature in this debate. The aim being to use this to determine the definitions, principles, opportunities, and key messages that guide our understanding of a “just transition”.
