Urban areas are increasingly seen as having a distinct role, as well as the motivation and capacity, to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and thereby mitigate climate change.
Many already integrate climate protection policies and mitigation measures into various sectors, such as urban planning, transport, generation of renewable energy, and building and construction. Citizen-engagement is a key element of these measures, ensuring local buy-in and securing uptake.
ICLEI's work in the field combines advocacy and direct action (for example, ICLEI is a founding member of the Global Covenant of Mayors for Climate & Energy). In addition to leading international campaigns on local climate action, ICLEI supports local authorities in the development of sustainable climate and energy plans and gives training on using local energy resources and data.
