To improve air quality, Tirana tests electric buses

City authorities in ICLEI Member City Tirana (Albania) are testing electric buses as part of efforts to lower pollution levels in the city.

Speaking about the initiative, Mayor of Tirana Erion Veliaj said: “Instead of filling Tirana with tram cables or technology belonging to the 1970s, we have now decided to develop and move to modern avant-garde technology.”

The move towards electric buses comes after success with electric cars. In September 2017, city authorities licensed the first electric taxi company alongside a fleet of electric cars for the Albanian police.

The move saw them become the only law enforcement agency in the region to use that vehicle type and only the fifth to do so in Europe.
