ICLEI becomes a member of the International Union for the Conservation of Nature

ICLEI has been accepted as a member of the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN).

The IUCN is the largest and oldest international environmental organisation, and channels the expertise and influence of more than 1,000 governmental and non-governmental Members, United Nations agencies and scientists and experts from 160 countries. Conserving biodiversity is central to the mission of IUCN. The organisation demonstrates how biodiversity is fundamental to addressing some of the world’s greatest challenges: tackling climate change, achieving sustainable energy, improving human well-being and building a green economy.

The Union has helped many countries prepare National Conservation Strategies, and demonstrates the application of its knowledge through field projects it supervises. ICLEI is heavily involved in biodiversity-related work, with the Local Action for Biodiversity (LAB) programme active around the world. The programme offers technical support, networking opportunities, advocacy and a range of other tools and services.
