Touring Turin's transformation

How can nature be used for urban regeneration with and for citizens? Explore one pioneering European city's work on this topic at an upcoming online event, taking place on 21–22 April.

Since 2018, Turin (Italy) has been implementing nature-based solutions for urban regeneration. Join this virtual tour of Turin, which will take participants through the various sites it is focused on, and its nature-based solutions, all while exploring challenges and successes faced in the implementation of solutions.

Turin has prioritised nature-based solutions in its transformation from an automotive-hub to a thriving green city, implementing solutions such as networks of parks, green cycling lanes, and green corridors along rivers and former railway lines. The city's success lies in its grassroots approach, with solutions implemented in consultation with locals, to ensure that the solutions cater to their needs, meet the local requirements and to secure acceptance and longevity.

During the upcoming two-day event, participants will get a chance to visit a school that has seen a green uprising in the form of green walls and garden beds, followed by an abandoned public building that has been repurposed for bees and other pollinators. Participants will be able to explore new soil – without getting their hands dirty! – along the Sangone river and pop into some community gardens. Participants can also explore an old Fiat factory area churning out vegetables instead of cars.

This work is being taken on as part of the proGIreg project – in which ICLEI Europe is a partner – which aims to regenerate industrial- and post-industrial districts in cities in Europe and China. The project has created ‘Living-labs’ in select cities, such as Turin, which are testbeds for local stakeholders to co-design and implement various nature-based solutions.
