ICLEI members take home prestigious energy awards

The six winners of the Sustainable Energy Europe (SEE) and the ManagEnergy Local Energy Action Awards, presented to the best projects in the field of energy efficiency and renewable energy sources, were announced at a ceremony hosted by Günther H. Oettinger, EU Commissioner for Energy on 24 June in Brussels (Belgium).

ICLEI member Bremen (Germany) took home the award in the category of transport for its exemplary car-sharing strategy, while fellow member Koprivnica (Croatia) won the ManagEnergy Local Energy Action Award for its project "The Bold New Face of Koprivnica", in which it set new standards for energy efficiency in buildings. The EURONET 50/50 project, in which the Province of Barcelona (Spain) is heavily involved, aims to raise awareness on energy use in schools, and encourages pupils, teachers and other members of the educational community to help change attitudes. It was awarded in the category of "learning".

Other winners include Westmill Solar Co-operative, for building the UK's first community-owned solar farm, the neighbourhood of Ålidhem (Sweden) for committing to halve its energy consumption within five years and Latvian citizen Dzivo siltak, for his communication campaign on energy-efficiency in the home. Each ambitious project was chosen from a total of 224 entries from across Europe.
