Experts are invited to apply to join a team that will evaluate and provide guidance to European cities that are leaders in sustainability.

Each year, the European Commission (EC) awards the prestigious European Green Capital and Green Leaf Awards to cities that have demonstrated outstanding achievements in urban sustainability. Applications are judged by a panel of experts that not only choose shortlisted cities, but also give advice to cities on how they can improve, thereby shaping future best practices.

Each member of the panel evaluates applications with respect to one environmental indicator. The EC is seeking four panel members with expertise in one of the following fields: green growth and eco-innovation; sustainable land use; waste management; and sustainable urban mobility.

In addition to their primary role of assessing applications and providing technical feedback to guide cities, panel members also respond to applicant questions, provide peer review, attend three evaluation meetings, and review guidance notes on indicator areas.

The most recent panel included experts working at the local, national, and European levels, as well as independent consultants and researchers. Among them were senior staff at ICLEI Members Bristol (United Kingdom) and Barcelona (Spain).

Applications to join the Expert Panel can be submitted by email or post by 30 August.
