Many cities worldwide are committing to creating healthier cities with creative and innovative approaches to green mobility. One such city is ICLEI Member Utrecht (the Netherlands), the winner of the Fully Charged CITIES award 2021, in recognition that the city “excels in the commitment to green energy and smart mobility”.

Fully Charged is an independent platform that educates its wide-reaching audience on the need for clean energy sources in mobility. The platform gives out its Fully Charged CITIES award to cities around the globe that are leaders working to reduce their carbon emissions. Given this brief, it is not surprising that Utrecht – a global leader in low-carbon mobility – was honoured this year.

The 2021 awards jury consisted of journalists, scientists and experts in the field of clean energy and sustainability. Utrecht was lauded for its ‘bicycle approach’ to urban mobility, for its phasing out of the gas network, along with its strong vision with ambitious technological and climate goals. Utrecht has a focus on achieving the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals by creating innovative solutions to herald in energy transition in a way that leaves no one behind.The Fully Charged CITIES award validates Utrecht's exemplary commitment to energy and mobility transition.

To showcase Utrecht’s role as the hotspot for healthy urban living in Europe and to inspire others, Fully Charged has produced three episodes about the city’s mobility work: Utrecht as a bicycle city, its bi-directional car charging systems and car-sharing initiatives in new housing projects.
