Mersin Yenişehir Municipality (Turkey) has joined ICLEI.
Located at the centre of Mersin, Yenişehir Municipality is the most developed district of Mersin province. Yenişehir Municipality has a surface area of 10.140 hectares, a population of around 260.000, is composed of 32 neighbourhoods and is home to the largest marina of Turkey on the Eastern Mediterranean shores.
Yenişehir intends to increase the amount of green space per capita within the boundaries of the district, including areas allocated as parks, recreation, children's playgrounds, sports areas. Yenişehir is a signatory of Covenant of Mayors.
“We are working to create a livable city with the understanding of service that we built on six basic principles consisting of Movement, Education, Citizenship, Solidarity, Urbanisation and Ecology,” contributes Abdullah Özyiğit, Mayor of Mersin Yenişehir.
Yenişehir Municipality is looking forward to working with ICLEI as they work to realise their integrated local climate and energy actions that will enhance sustainable development in their region. They intend to lead in nature-based development by protecting biodiversity, develop and implement a circular economy, ensure that their sustainable strategies are prepared for new risks and impacts, and overall build a more just and livable city.
