ICLEI Member Guimarães and Águeda (Portugal), have achieved prestigious recognition in the European Green Cities Awards 2026! Announced on 27 November, Guimarães was crowned European Green Capital 2026, while Águeda was named one of the European Green Leaf 2026 winners, alongside Vaasa (Finland).
Guimarães earned the European Green Capital title for its strong commitment to sustainability and exceptional achievements across all sectors of society. The jury praised the city’s ability to integrate sustainability into its culture, engaging citizens, academia, and the private sector under the “One Planet City” motto.
The city’s Governance Ecosystem 2030 programme showcases its forward-thinking approach, including strategies like the city’s recycling initiative, RRRICICLO, and Pay-As-You-Throw (PAYT) to reduce or valorise waste. Guimarães also actively participates in European sustainability initiatives, such as the “Let’s Clean Europe” campaign. Its unique blend of science and community action has made it a beacon for sustainable development in Europe. Águeda’s Green Leaf award reflects its structured and inclusive approach to sustainability. The jury highlighted initiatives like the Valoriz@rte project, which integrates circular economy principles into municipal procurement by using recycled materials in urban art and modular architecture.
Through extensive community engagement and the promotion of circular practices, Águeda has proven that smaller cities can lead by example in the green transition. The city’s impact is further strengthened through partnerships and knowledge-sharing within national and international networks.
