The ICLEI network continues to grow, thanks to the addition of four new Members: Marseille (France), Setúbal (Portugal), Opsterland (The Netherlands) and Merzifon (Türkiye). At ICLEI we believe that transformational change begins at the local level, where cities and regions play a key role in driving sustainable development. By joining forces, the cities will contribute to a global movement dedicated to climate neutrality.
A few words about our new Members:
Marseille (France)
The city of Marseille, located in the South of France, is the second largest city of the country in terms of population with roughly 1,650,000 inhabitants (including the urban agglomeration). Marseille was selected by the European Commission in April 2022 for the “100 Climate-Neutral Cities by 2030” programme.
Setúbal (Portugal)
Setúbal, a city in Portugal with around 123,000 residents, is known for its rich natural surroundings, including the Sado Estuary and Arrábida Natural Park, both part of the Natura 2000 network. The city has already implemented several projects toward sustainability (from teaching support tools and certificates to scientific-pedagogical gardening).
Opsterland (The Netherlands)
The city is located in the Friesland province, has a population of approximately 30,000 people. The municipality is characterised by its rural nature and is committed to achieve sustainability through urban and rural cooperation.
Merzifon (Türkiye)
Located in the Black Sea region, the Turkish town of the Amasya Province has a population of around 75,000 inhabitants. Increasingly aware of climate challenges, the local community has already taken steps to promote sustainable practices, including waste reduction, renewable energy adoption, and greener urban development.
