New report presents green solutions for former industrial cities

On 22 April, in celebration of Earth Day 2019, the Urban Transitions Alliance released a report that details innovative and tested solutions that cities can implement to help transition away from their industrial pasts.

The Alliance – which is a network and knowledge hub managed by ICLEI and funded by Stiftung Mercator – is made up of eleven cities spanning Europe, the USA, and China, all with industrial legacies.

These cities, including ICLEI Europe Member Katowice (Poland), have committed to policy and infrastructure changes in the areas of energy, mobility, infrastructure reuse, and social inclusion.

Alliance cities have spent the last two years identifying areas of focus to ease their transition, exchanging lessons, and implementing solutions. For example, in Katowice, an energy education centre was opened to educate residents on efficiency and renewable energy options within the city.

The new report shares lessons learned so that other cities and local governments can benefit from the Alliance, apply their solutions, and be inspired to action.
