Zagreb welcomes city’s first underground waste separation containers

Underground waste separation containers have been installed in ICLEI Member Zagreb (Croatia), enabling the hygienic separation of plastic, paper, glass, and textile waste.

The first waste container, which has a capacity of 1,100 litres and cost around €19,000, is located on Kranjčevićeva Street in the old city center. Since its installation a further two containers have been installed in other city centre locations.

According to data from the Croatian Environmental Protection Agency, at present only 27.65 percent of waste in the city is separated. In order to comply with EU standards, Zagreb is obliged to raise this figure to 50 percent by 2020.

In an attempt to meet EU regulations, the Zagreb City Government has plans to install smaller waste containers in front of every building in the city, with larger ones for every 15 or so buildings.
