Waste-Less in Chianti encourages waste separation

A new collection system for residual waste is being tested in the Italian municipalities of Greve in Chianti, San Casciano in Val di Pesa and Tavarnelle Val di Pesa in the Florentine Chianti. Waste authority Quadrifoglio installed new bins that require the insertion of a personalised electronic memory stick to open, reducing the possibility of throwing out waste without first making a proper separation and encouraging more conscientious behaviour.

The testing phase involves over 10,000 users and aims to reduce total municipal waste generation by 10 percent. It is also planned that the rate of waste separate collection will increase by over 65 percent in all municipalities. Based on the results of the testing phase, the system will be gradually extended to the whole territory.

This project is part of the ongoing actions of the LIFE+ Waste Less Chianti project, which aims to contribute to the success of the European and National policies on waste prevention and sustainable consumption through the implementation and monitoring of an integrated waste prevention and reduction programme in Chianti.
