Cities and regions across Europe are working in community to implement effective climate adaptation action. However, they need support to make this happen. That’s where the EU Policy Support Facility comes in. Recognising the importance of local action to climate adaptation and resilience, the European Commission launched this Policy Support Facility to assist local and regional authorities develop and implement adaptation strategies under the Covenant of Mayors – Europe.

To this end, next week the European Commission (via the Covenant of Mayors – Europe Office) is launching an interactive webinar series on “Fostering local, just resilience”. ICLEI Members Barcelona (Spain), Cascais (Portugal) and Malmö (Sweden) will be present to share their experiences on accelerating adaptation, reducing risk of disaster, and on implementing just climate adaptation.

This series will be the first of a number of activities that aim to support cities and regions in the implementation of their resilience plans, through peer-to-peer learning and tailored support from experts.

The “Fostering local, just resilience” series

On 22 March from 14:30–16:30 CET, the first in this three-part webinar series will introduce participants to the new EU Policy Support Facility, including how it functions and its main objectives. Of particular note, the session will provide an overview of financing and funding opportunities at the EU-level that can help cities and regions put adaptation plans into action. 

Next up, a session on “Speeding up adaptation to reduce disaster risk” (23 March, 11:00–12:30 CET) will present local experiences of disaster risk management, with particular reference to the implementation of nature-based solutions.

Lastly, panellists speaking at a session on 24 March, 11:00–12:30 CET on “Implementing just climate adaptation” will share their knowledge on integrating the social dimension into adaptation planning, engaging vulnerable groups and selecting paths forward that leave no one behind.
