Urban Agriculture Strategy Meeting

Drivers for sustainable urban food production

28 May 2014
Bonn, Germany- Gustav-Stresemann-Institute

Which policy and legislation frameworks are required to enable successful urban-regional food production, and in particular city-business cooperation models? How can we ensure integrated policies linked to environment, ecology, health, social needs and urban planning? And how can such an integrated approach be developed most efficiently as part of an urban resilience strategy?

These questions and more will be answered at the strategic urban agriculture workshop, taking place during the Resilient Cities Conference in Bonn. In preparation for the 2015 Global Urban Agriculture Summit, ICLEI and Plantagon (Sweden) are bringing interested local governments together with organisations and companies to discuss a roadmap to resilient urban food systems in the run up to HABITAT III.

Urban and peri-urban agriculture are becoming increasingly important to help feed large urban populations as well as contributing to local employment and revenue generation. City-business models for sustainable urban food production could help expand these opportunities. Around the world different business models are being implemented and analysed, from small-scale urban farming enterprises led by urban producers, to franchise models, to vertical farming with latest technologies. These models include food production, collection, distribution & marketing, connect to local programs on healthy food and educating people on alternatives to fast food, and involve different stakeholders.

This one day workshop on strategic agriculture will include input from a key note speaker and two panel sessions discussing key questions such as an enabling framework for urban agriculture, city-business cooperation models and quality of urban food.

Attendance is free, but registration is recommended as places are limited and will be given on a first-come, first-served basis.
