A framework for risk management and climate adaptation for historic areas

17 March 2022, 14:30 - 16:30
- online

There is widespread conversation around the impacts of climate change and climate hazards on cities. However, there is much less discussion on how climate change will impact (and is impacting) historic areas, which are markedly at risk.

To this end, the ARCH project has developed a framework for better consideration of climate risk management for historic areas.

On 17 March, the project will host an online discussion to present the document and gather feedback on a “draft CEN Workshop Agreement”. All interested persons are warmly invited to join.

The draft document

ARCH’s CEN Workshop Agreement (CWA) is part of standardisation efforts based on the ARCH Disaster Risk Management Framework, which outlines a step-by-step process to manage disasters, climate change adaptation and resilience-building.

The draft CWA, which was developed in the structure of the European Committee for Standardisation (CEN-CENELEC) under the title “CWA 17727 on a Disaster Risk Management / Climate Change Adaptation Framework for historic areas” is now available for public review and comments.

The draft CWA defines an integrated approach that combines disaster risk management and climate change adaptation for historic areas in communities. It includes:

  • characterisation of historic areas and their exposure to natural and climate change-induced hazards;
  • a set of requirements and recommendation on how historic areas can become more resilient; and
  • a step-by-step process to manage disasters, and to perform and monitor resilience-building activities.

ARCH welcomes feedback on the draft, which can be done by completing the comments form available here, or live during the 17 March webinar.
