The Edinburgh Process and Declaration

the role of regional governments within the UN Convention on Biodiversity - CoP15

1 June 2022, 10:30 - 12:30
Brussels, Belgium- hybrid: online or in-person at Scotland House Brussels

Join a hybrid event (online or in-person in Brussels) on 1 June to dig into the Edinburgh Process & Declaration, and celebrate local leadership in global biodiversity conservation. The event, organised by ICLEI Europe, Scotland House Brussels, and the European Committee of the Regions, will celebrate regional and local action in the global fight against biodiversity loss.

In order to achieve truly transformational change #ForNature in the next decade, it will be crucial that all levels of government and society work together. This is where the Edinburgh Process and Edinburgh Declaration come in.

In the simplest terms, the Edinburgh Process is a consultation process with sub-national governments (regional, city and local authorities) on their roles in the UN Convention on Biological Diversity’s (CBD’s) Post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework and its targets. It ensures that all levels of government are included in planning, reporting, and implementing the framework.

A key output of this process was the so-called Edinburgh Declaration, which calls on the Parties to the CBD to recognise the role of local authorities in delivering the actions needed to meet biodiversity goals and targets. The success of the Framework undoubtedly relies on local action.

Join us on 1 June as we celebrate local leadership, connect participants via a networking brunch, and provide information on how sub-national governments and authorities can sign the Declaration. Click here to register.
