Basque municipalities provide practical guidance on localising the Sustainable Development Goals

Municipalities seeking guidance on localising Agenda 2030 and its associated Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) can now make use of a guidance document published by ICLEI Member Udalsarea - a network of over 200 Basque municipalities committed to sustainability.

The document, which is titled "Local 2030 Agenda: How to address Sustainable Development Goals from local level", seeks to provide municipalities with practical steps to address Agenda 2030 and its associated Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) from the local level.

The guidance documents begins by addressing the opportunities and benefits localising Agenda 2030 provides municipalities, which range from increased funding opportunities, to strengthening political involvement.

It then goes on to outline five steps local authorities can undertake to localise Agenda 2030 and the SDGs – Step 1: how to approach the process to prepare the Local 2030 Agenda; Step 2: Establish the SDGs from the local reality; Step 3: Formulate the Local Agenda strategy; Step 4: Preparing the Local 2030 Agenda plan; Step 5: Measure the contribution of the municipality to the SDGs.
