Brussels to host interactive event on red list status of Europe’s overlooked species

IUCN and the Environment Department of the City of Brussels (Belgium) will host an interactive event, where the results of the LIFE European Red Lists project: ‘Establishing a European Red List of Bryophytes, Pteridophytes, Saproxylic Beetles, Terrestrial Molluscs and Vascular Plants' will be presented.

The European Red List is a review of the status of European species according to IUCN regional Red Listing guidelines. It identifies those species that are threatened with extinction at the European level, so that appropriate conservation action can be taken to improve their status.

The event, which will take place in Brussels 27 September, 09:00AM-18:00PM CEST, will provide participants with the opportunity to engage with the latest European Red List findings and identify the implications on conservation and environmental policy, both at a European and national-level.

The event will consist of a mixture of short presentations by international species and conservation planning experts, biodiversity policy experts and members of the European Commission, as well as multiple interactive panel discussions where all attendees will be encouraged to participate.

Experts will present the results of their respective European Red Lists, followed by discussions on what they signify for conservation planning and EU nature and biodiversity policy in the future, and conclude with discussions on ways to increase the reach of European Red Lists.
