ICLEI Member Aalborg sets the stage for local participation

"Aalborg 2024 is a unique platform where participants can exchange ideas, learn from each other, and develop new approaches to promote sustainability in our cities. And, while professionals and decision-makers discuss sustainability at the conference, Kildeparken will be buzzing with green activities for everyone." - Mayor Lasse Frimand Jensen, Member of ICLEI RexCom Europe

In less than one year, Aalborg 2024, the 10th European Conference on Sustainable Cities and Towns, will open its doors. 30 years after the groundbreaking Aalborg Charter and 20 years after the Aalborg Commitments, the city will welcome back politicians, officials, experts, researchers and organisations from across Europe.

The planning is well underway to make this conference not only a ground-breaking event for European Cities, but also an inclusive experience for all local residents. The conference will be held in the middle of the city, with the surrounding park alive with a parallel week-long sustainability festival that will include everyone from businesses to the civil society, to students and schools. In turn, the festival not only ties in local actors with the international conference but will also show international guests how Aalborg exemplifies participatory approaches and the Local Green Deal spirit.

Festival activities will include:

  • Art, culture and music that surprise, enlighten, and inspire sustainable action;
  • Activities and games with a focus on sustainable education to create curiosity, interest, and understanding in children and young people;
  • Engaging workshops, exhibitions, and activities that inspire the whole family to live sustainably;
  • Collaborations across municipalities to promote concrete sustainable local initiatives.
