New ICLEI Member Metropolregion Amsterdam supports the transition to a circular economy in Europe

Last week ICLEI Europe welcomed the Metropolregion Amsterdam (the Netherlands) as a new Member in its Brussels office on the sidelines of the World Economic Circular Forum 2024. As a new ICLEI Member, a delegation led by Esther Rommel, Regional Minister of the Province of Noord-Holland, signed the Circular Cities Declaration and discussed future cooperation for strengthening the voice of local and regional governments in Brussels.

The Metropolregion Amsterdam (MRA - Metropoolregio Amsterdam), represents 2.5 million people (corresponding to more than 14% of the Dutch population) and is comprised of 30 municipalities, two provinces (North Holland and Flevoland) and the Transport Authority Amsterdam. As a leading economic region in Europe with an international profile, the Metropolregion and ICLEI will work together on fostering a more circular European economy together with 80 other signatories from local and regional governments supporting the Circular Cities Declaration.

The Declaration is a commitment document from cities and regions to use the levers at their disposal coherently across the organisation to transition from a linear to a circular economy. Signatories from local and regional governments across Europe believe and promote that:

  • We need to decouple economic growth from resource use
  • Local and regional governments have a critical role to play
  • A common vision of a circular economy is a useful journey guidance
