New tools available to support green public procurement

Green Public Procurement (GPP) refers to public authorities purchasing goods and services, which have lower environmental impacts. This can be a vast and impactful undertaking.

A GPP Training Toolkit, developed by ICLEI Europe, was recently published by the European Commission’s Environment Director General. This toolkit is designed to support public purchasers and those training purchasers on GPP.

The toolkit is divided into a number of strategic and operational modules. Strategic modules cover topics such as strategic implementation, legal contexts and market engagement, while operational modules span topics including building design, transport, lighting, textiles, and more.

On behalf of the European Commission, ICLEI Europe is concurrently coordinating a GPP training programme in eleven countries: Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta, Poland, Portugal, and Romania. The programme aims to increase uptake of GPP through targeted trainings, to be delivered by national organisations. Training covers topics including implementing GPP, assessing GPP needs, engaging with suppliers, and introducing participants to circular procurement.

All material from the GPP training programme is also available on the European Commission’s GPP website.
