What support can EU institutions provide cities as they face this energy crisis?

~The following text is adapted from the Covenant of Mayors Europe, whose office is operated by a consortium of city networks that includes ICLEI Europe.~

The ongoing energy crisis directly impacts cities and their inhabitants, with the heaviest burdens falling on those suffering from increased energy poverty. This is an emergency, which is putting the quality of life and health of Europeans at real risk.

Fortunately, local authorities have shown readiness to respond. On top of delivering ambitious local climate solutions, they have put in place immediate, low-cost actions to reduce energy demand in public facilities. Since the crisis hit, many local authorities have increased the share of renewables, all while supporting the most vulnerable households and local businesses.

Municipalities manage a large portfolio of building stock, and have competences in urban planning, built infrastructure, public lighting, and transport – in other words, they can lead by example. Being the closest level of government to citizens, they are also well placed to enable behavioural changes among individuals and local businesses.

Join other local and European leaders next month to draw on examples of measures that have successfully addressed the energy crisis while protecting residents, and to reflect on what support European institutions and national governments can give to further strengthen these efforts.

Local governments that attend this Covenant of Mayors – Europe conference will have opportunities to exchange with representatives from European Institutions, including Executive Vice-President Frans Timmermans, EU Commissioner for Energy Kadri Simson, as well as representatives from the European Parliament and the Committee of the Regions.
