Greek cities can apply for financial support for data-driven climate action through ICLEI Action Fund

With rising temperatures and vulnerability to climate-related events, Greek cities grapple with environmental challenges like energy poverty, heat waves, and infrastructure vulnerability. To combat this, Greece must drive a sustainable energy transition to mitigate the impacts of climate change while adapting to the changing climate in their territory. Despite commendable efforts outlined in the National Energy and Climate Action Plan and Climate Law, the need for innovative, data-driven and technology-based projects to achieve ambitious climate targets is evident.

To address these challenges, ICLEI Europe, with support from Google.org, has recently launched the ICLEI Action Fund Greece. The granting scheme is grounded in three key pillars: data-driven action, sustainability impact, and innovation. The goal is to empower Greek cities through projects focused on reducing greenhouse gas emissions and enhancing climate resilience. This entails fostering environmental protection, renewable energy, energy efficiency, and sustainable practices, aligning with the broader EU strategies for climate neutrality and climate adaptation.

The ICLEI Action Fund Greece will grant up to 275,000€ to projects developed by civil society organisations, research institutions, and academic bodies in several Greek cities, including ICLEI Members Athens (including Central Athens and Vari-Voula-Vouliagmeni), Kozani, Larissa and Thessaloniki as well as Chalkis Heraklion (Crete), Ioannina, Kalamata, and Trikala. The emphasis lies on sustainable practices, resource efficiency, and low-carbon solutions. Eligible organisations, including non-profit and research and academic institutions, are invited to submit their proposals before 29 February 2024.

The eligibility criteria and application form can be found here. The proposed projects should align with the city's climate and sustainability plans, emphasising data-driven climate and environmental action, with a focus on key urban sustainability topics such as sustainable mobility, energy-efficient buildings, solar energy, air quality management, and climate adaptation and resilience. The application process is a gateway for interested entities to become key contributors to Greece's sustainable future.

The ICLEI Action Fund Greece aligns with the EU Green Deal, addressing Greece's climate challenges through sustainable and resilient projects. Collaborations with cities in the EU Mission for Climate Neutral and Smart Cities which are part of the EU Adaptation Mission, ensure long-term impact. Organisations are invited to submit proposals, playing a vital role in shaping a greener future for Greece and Europe.
